Event History:

Back in 1981, the same year Family Rescue was founded, Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the Day of Unity conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The month is intended to be a designated time to mourn those killed by their abusers and the impacts of abuse, celebrate survivors, and connect advocates. In the past we have marched on the sidewalks throughout the South Side demanding peace, created public las ofrendas (Dia de los Muertos alters), passed out backpacks with resources, and fed our community. We’ve done this all while amplifying the voices of survivors, raising awareness about domestic violence, and encouraging others to join us in our mission to eliminate abuse in the Chicagoland area. You can learn more about our work here.
